The Benefits of Hiring a Doula
The Woman Who Serves
Arguably the most important day in a woman's life is her second birth-day; the day she births her baby. The moment you come face to face with your new life, your own life is transformed. For many women, the process of labor and birth is met with doubt, fear, unknowns and lack of support. But every woman deserves to be surrounded with love, knowledge, and trust in herself and those caring for her. A doula can be a vital piece in making that happen. Though not a medical professional, a doula is a skilled and trained birth worker, whose main priority is supporting the mother in her labor and birth. There are numerous benefits to hiring a doula for your pregnancy and birth. Through an established, trusting relationship in prenatal care and continuous labor support, a doula could mean a mother is less likely to need pitocin, have a cesarean birth, use pain medication, and more likely to rate their childbirth experience positively.
Having a doula means a mother has continuous labor support. A doula is present to assist you in relaxation and comfort techniques, positive encouragement, prayer, holding space for mom and her birth wishes, help with fetal positioning, and tending to every little need of the mother. Husbands also benefit from having a doula present. We seek to support husbands so that they can be confident and present, in the kind of way a doula cannot. The intimate and emotional love of your partner is irreplaceable and deeply important in the birth space.
Having a doula means someone is there to listen to you, in a way and space that your provider may not. Whatever questions arise, we are there by phone, text, email and in person to answer and educate you as best as possible. Our hope is that a mother feels heard and seen so that she can peacefully and powerfully bring her baby into the world. Doulas are not just there when labor begins but the months leading up to it and after!
Having a doula means a well informed mother. When you hire a doula, you may be just one of a few clients for your estimated due month! That means intentional time preparing your mind, heart and body for birth. Doulas can be an informational aid in labor and discuss options, interventions and wishes between you and your care team. Birth should be something that transforms you in the best way, not something that just happens to you and leaves you processing alone! With a doula on your side, you can be at ease knowing they will work hard to equip you and be there through every up and down. Having a doula means someone is there to not hold the baby, but to hold the mother.
